What drives my art; Connection, Curiosity, Authenticity
What drives my art.: Connection, Curiosity, Authenticity
As an artist, I’ve always been drawn to what lies beneath the surface—the hidden patterns in nature, the unseen connections between things, and the quiet stories waiting to be discovered. My work in organic abstract art is a direct reflection of these fascinations, and I’ve come to realize that the values driving my creative process are the same ones that shape how I experience the world.
Connection: Seeing the Invisible Threads
One of the most powerful ideas that fuels my art is connection—the way everything in nature, thought, and experience is intertwined. I admire visionaries like David Attenborough and Jacques Cousteau, who have dedicated their lives to revealing the hidden relationships within ecosystems. Likewise, scientists like Martin Sheldrake, who studies fungi and mycelial networks, inspire me with their insights into the unseen ways life communicates beneath our feet.
In my paintings, I explore these organic, flowing interconnections—sometimes evoking the underground world of roots and water, sometimes capturing the fluid energy of a river or the layered depths of the earth. My recent Hidden Worlds series is a direct expression of this fascination, inviting viewers to sense the unseen rather than just observe the obvious.
Curiosity: A Lifelong Exploration
I’m deeply inspired by those who seek knowledge across disciplines—artists, scientists, writers, and thinkers who question, explore, and experiment. Figures like Tim Spector, who researches gut health and microbiomes, remind me that entire universes exist at microscopic levels. Artists like Brian Rutenberg and Ann Blockley embrace expressive, intuitive mark-making that defies rigid structures. Their work, like my own, thrives on curiosity—the desire to push past the expected and see where creative instincts lead.
My own art process is fueled by this same curiosity. I rarely begin a painting with a fixed outcome in mind. Instead, I allow colors, textures, and organic forms to guide me, much like the way nature itself evolves through time. This sense of exploration is something I hope my collectors feel when they engage with my work—an invitation to wonder, to look deeper, and to find their own meanings within each piece.
Authenticity: Trusting the Creative Voice
In a world that often values trends over originality, authenticity is something I hold close. The artists I admire—Alice Sheridan, Louise Fletcher, and Nick Neddo, among others—are those who create with honesty, allowing their unique perspectives to shine through. They remind me that great art isn’t about following rules or pleasing the masses; it’s about trusting your own voice.
For me, authenticity means embracing the unpredictability of organic abstraction, letting my instincts shape the work, and allowing space for emotion and intuition to emerge. It also means creating art that resonates with people who share my values—those who are drawn to nature, curiosity, and the beauty of hidden connections.
